Navdanya is a network of seed keepers and organic producers spread across 17 states in India.It was founded by Dr. Vandana Shiva, world-renowned scientist and environmentalist. Navdanya was born of a search for nonviolent farming, which protects biodiversity, the Earth and the small farmers of India.The main aim of the Navdanya biodiversity conservation program is to support local farmers, rescue and conserve crops and plants that are being pushed to extinction and make them available through direct marketing.
Farmer suicides in India refers to the national catastrophe of farmers committing suicide since the 1990s, often by drinking pesticides, due to their inability to repay loans mostly taken from landlords and banks.
As of 2014, in Maharashtra alone, more than 60,000 suicides had taken place, with an average of 10 suicides every day.[1]
The National Crime Records Bureau of India reported that a total 296,438 Indian farmers had committed suicide since 1995.
